"I'm not a little girl." Alice said behind clenched teeth, this wasn't her first job at sea either, she just didn't like her other one, "I might be older then you, but you shall never know." She said, so far Thorn was the one for her to mess with.

"I fail to see the relevance of our ages," Thorn said dryly. He glanced over to Dalla and asked them both, "Any other questions?"

"Yeah, why do ya got to be so serious?" Alice asked and crossed her arms, this kid couldn't joke around at all.

"I have a favor to ask, Thorkil," Leif began. "I want you to take young Gunnar here on as an apprentice on your ship. It'll be good for the lad."
The shackles chafed around Banto's arms and legs, and the chains dragged the ground behind him, but he did not struggle against them. He was used to that by now, the feel of the metal on his skin, the sounds and smells of the slave market. He had been a slave most of his life, after all, and probably would be til the day he died. Birka was different than any of the other cities he had been to; it was colder, the people lighter, and the air smelled faintly of fish.

"Oh?" Thorkil looked down at Gunnar. "You ever sailed before, boy?"
Thorn snorted. "Well, I'll let you ladies get settled in then," he said. "I believe I have to see a man about a goat anyway." It never hurt to make a sacrifice before a long voyage like theirs.

Alice didn't bother to get on the boat, she followed Thorn instead. "What do you need a goat for?" She asked.

"No, sir," Gunnar replied weakly. "But I'm a fast learner." "Aye, that he is," Leif chuckled. "If it's not too much trouble, Thorkil."

Kareem stepped in front of the dark-haired man as he started to leave. "You need sailors, do you?" he asked in accented [whatever language they are speaking]. "My brother and I look for work."
(I figure Kareem and Aquila speak Arabic and Castellano fluently, but have recently learned... idk, Dutch? Norse? Is Norse a language? What language would everyone be speaking in this setting? I don't know nada about medieval Northern Europe. But anyway they can probably speak in Arabic with Banto if he's from North Africa. I imagine their family owned slaves when they were young, so they might be a bit prejudiced. We'll see.)

(I think at the time everyone would be speaking Old Norse, which is really similar to modern Icelandic. And I should be nice and share my two favorite resource pages!) Thorkil looked down at Gunnar and smiled. "Well, we'll give it a try. Welcome aboard, lad." Before Thorn could give Alice a sarcastic reply, he was interrupted by a pair of foreigners, with dark skin and eyes nearly as light as his own. We are getting all the odd ones, aren't we? he thought. It wasn't surprising though. If people could avoid being on a boat with a witch, they would. He crossed his arms and studied them. "You ever sailed a longboat before?"

Kareem nodded. "For six months we did." He glanced at Aquila. "It is not long, but we learn fast and work hard." Aquila stayed silent, standing slightly behind her brother. She had been passing off as a boy for most of the last year, so she had gotten used to mimicking the confident, casual posture that was so different from how she was raised to stand. The silence was the same, though.

"Then welcome aboard," Thorn said. He repeated his little speech about the ship, and asked, "And you are?"

Kareem nodded in thanks. "I am Kareem Abincerraje, and my brother is Aquil." He lifted the large knapsack that held all their worldly belongings and stepped onto the longboat. Aquila looked up into the ice blue eyes of the young man who had just hired them, and then ducked around him and followed Kareem onto the vessel.

Thorn leaned back to watch them board. Or, more properly, to watch the smaller brother board. He didn't think he'd mind being on the ship so long with Aquil to look at.
(Thorn you pervert.)

Gunnar smiled weakly as his father clapped Thorkil on the shoulder. "Good man," he said. "I best be off...I have a few supplies to gather while I'm in town. Take care, lad." And with that, the big man was off.
Banto looked around him, eyes examining the longboats in the harbor. More than likely, by the end of the day, he would be on one of those.
