Alice stood there awkwardly when Thorn was explaining everything to the other people, "So, why do you need a goat and why are you staring at that guy?" She tried hard to hide a smile, she knew the answer to the second question.

"I'm staring at him 'cause I like his ass," Thorn said bluntly. He glanced back over at Alice. "I'm getting a goat to sacrifice, in hopes that we'll have a good voyage."
"Well then, Gunnar. To the ship." Thorkil started, towing Gunnar a long. "We'll see if my boy found us any sailors."

"He does have a pretty nice ass, why do you sacrifice if you can only hope for a good voyage, it seems fifty fifty either way." Alice said shrugging her shoulders.

Thorn shook his head. "You're not a pagan, are you?" he asked.

Aquila overheard Thorn's comment, but she did not turn around. Her pale eyes, a color somewhere between blue and green and hazel, widened in alarm. Someone had seen through her disguise once before and now it seemed to be happening again, until she realized that Thorn had still used masculine pronouns. She suppressed a snort of laughter. "What's so funny?" asked Kareem in Arabic as she reached him. "Nothing," she answered, keeping her voice low. She was glad her overprotective brother had not heard, or he would have already tried to throw Thorn off the docks and into the frigid water.

"No. But we have fickle gods. It's safer to sacrifice to them and hope we've earned their blessing, if only for a while, than to snub them and be punished for it." Thorn smiled. "And on the ocean, you never want to upset the storm god. So we'll give Thor a goat and hope he's pleased."

Alice smiled when he did, it was good to actually see him smile, "I can help." She said happily then added, "There's something different about you then most people."

"Your powers of observation are stunning," Thorn said.

Gunnar looked around him with nervous excitement. There were so many people in Birka, so many more than in his village. There were dark skinned people nearby in chains and shackles, like the ones his father had made for prisoners before. "Are those prisoners?" he asked Thorkil. "Or slaves?" One in particular seemed to be staring at Gunnar with dark, fierce eyes, and the man quite frankly made him nervous.

"Glad you noticed, people seem to over look my skills." Alice said, "What about those goats?" She asked pointing to a flock for sale.

"Most of them are probably both," Thorkil told Gunnar. "Raiders capture those they can and sell them as slaves for profit."
Thorn stopped at the goats. He wasn't sure if Alice couldn't read his sarcasm or if she were deliberately ignoring it, but he didn't feel like mentioning it.

Alice rolled her eyes, "So, why are you so different?" She asked, "Are you some kind of weirdo?"

Gunnar swallowed. "Do you ever buy any of them?" he asked. He wasn't sure how he felt about traveling with the likes of those guys. What had his father gotten him into?

"Rarely," Thorkil said. "The last slave I bought turned out to be something of a pain. Speaking of," he murmured, and then called, "Thorn!"
"That's one way to put it," Thorn grumbled. He craned his head around at the sound of his name. "Thorkil!" He looked at the boy with him and scowled. "What's this?"
